This property in Sutton had a lot going on - multiple beds spread across a large yard, tree rings, foundation plantings, and a long curved border running along the fence line. With that much ground to cover, the mulch choice and application method both matter a lot. We went with black mulch across the board, and it ties everything together in a way that a natural brown just wouldn't.
Twenty yards is a serious haul. We worked through the long curved bed along the back, the standalone tree ring out in the open lawn, and the foundation beds wrapping around the front and side of the house. Each area got a clean edge and an even layer - no thin spots, no piling up against the plant stems.
Black mulch does a few things really well. It holds moisture better than bare soil, which is a real benefit during stretches of dry summer heat. It also suppresses weeds without any chemicals. But honestly, a big part of why people choose it is the contrast - dark mulch against green plants and a red house like this one just looks sharp. The beds go from looking like an afterthought to looking intentional.
The clean edge between the mulch and the lawn is what separates a good mulch job from a great one. It's the detail that most people notice first, even if they can't put their finger on exactly why the beds look so much better. We take that part seriously on every job, no matter how big or small the property is.
