A lot of homeowners in the Ashland area are sitting on more usable space than they realize. The issue is that overgrown brush, scrubby trees, and uneven ground make it impossible to actually use. That was exactly the situation here - a backyard that felt cramped and unfinished because the wooded edge had crept in and taken over.

We brought in our Kubota KX040-S mini excavator to get into the tighter areas and clear out the overgrowth right up to the tree line. From there, the CAT 257B compact track loader with a soil conditioner attachment came in to work the ground - breaking up the surface, smoothing it out, and getting it ready to tie into the existing lawn. Two machines, two different jobs, working together to get a clean result.

This is what land clearing and grading looks like when it's done right. It's not just about removing what's in the way - it's about shaping the ground so it actually drains properly, lays flat, and connects naturally to the rest of the yard. Skipping the grading step is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make. You end up with cleared ground that's lumpy, holds water, and never grows in evenly.

What this homeowner ended up with is a noticeably larger yard. The space flows from the existing lawn out into freshly graded ground, with a clean edge against the tree line. It opens up the whole back of the property and gives them room to do whatever they want next - grass, a patio, a play area. The layout just makes sense now.

If your yard feels tight or the wooded edge of your property has gotten out of hand, clearing and grading is usually the right starting point. It sets everything else up for success.
