Spring cleanups are in full swing for us right now. And one thing we always make sure to include - dethatching. It's one of those steps that gets skipped a lot, but it really does matter more than most people realize.

Here's the thing about thatch. It's that layer of dead grass, old roots, and debris that builds up just above the soil over time. A little of it is fine, but when it gets thick enough, it starts acting like a barrier. Water, air, and nutrients have a harder time reaching the roots. Your grass ends up working against itself before the growing season even gets started.

When we walk a lawn this time of year, the first thing we're looking at is what's sitting in that turf layer. That mix of green shoots trying to push through and matted dead material underneath tells us exactly what the lawn needs. Dethatching pulls that stuff out and opens everything up - giving new growth room to breathe and spread properly.

After we dethatch, we follow up with a full cleanup and mow. The difference is real. The lawn looks cleaner, the grass responds better, and the results you see later in the season reflect the work that went in early. It's the kind of foundational maintenance that pays off every week for the rest of the year - which is exactly why we build it into our weekly lawn maintenance schedules from the start.

If your lawn is still looking dull and matted coming out of winter, that's usually a sign it needs more than just a mow. Getting ahead of it now is always the smarter move.
